Rey's Story

By In Uncategorized

"Yes, Rey?"
"Nine."
"Good job! That is correct!"
The teacher smiled at Rey, silently clapping her hands in celebration for his intelligence. Rey smiled, showing his bright, beautifully set teeth. With bright blue eyes and fiery red hair, Rey was a handsome young lad for a sixth grader.

The teacher turned back to the board, writing out more math equations for the class to work on.
"Psst… Hey! Asshole!" A voice behind him called.
"You! Turn around!" Rey turned around to stare into the face of B, the biggest kid in the school. B was short for Brickford, Rey, and all the other kids' tormentor.

B's face was slim, with two large brown eyes that spell death for any who looked into them. As you looked into them, it was as though you were the target of the devil himself. His beady eyes locked yours, and you could not look away.

His hair, gelled into a fine mohawk on top of his head, was topped with a tint of pink at the tips of the spikes, spelling out his defiance to the school hair code.
"Yah, you. Asshole! You think you're so smart, eh? Smart lil' kid? Well you're not. Got that, asshole? Answer another question right… And I'll kill you, kid." Rey nodded, scared to death by the larger boy that still locked his eyes.

"What is 14 divided by 3, uhmmm… Rey!" Rey struggled to tear his gaze from B. Luckily, Brickford blinked and Rey twisted his body, facing the teacher who had so lovingly chosen him to answer the question. He stuttered, the threat floating around his brain. His intelligence won the battle as he blurted out

"4.66666667!"

The teacher was stunned as she realized he had not used a calculator to answer he difficult question.

"Wow, Rey… That is correct!" Rey heard a growl from behind him, in the direction of Brick. He heard a faint whisper, "You're dead, Rey. You hear me? Dead."

Rey pretended to ignore the bully's voice, knowing that if you ignore a bully he will eventually stop bothering you. It seemed to work. After what seemed like several hours, the bell to end of the day rang.

"Have a good weekend, children!" the teacher shouted above the children's voices as they rushed out of the class, eager to get out of school as quickly as possible. Hiding behind his textbook, Rey waited for Brickford and his gang of friends to leave the class. Checking if it was O.K., he got up and ran to the door, scanning the halls for any sign of the gang.

When all was clear, he dashed to his locker and opened it. Shoving his books inside, he took a breath and closed it, to come face to face with B.

"Hello!" Spit landed on Rey's face.

"What do you want, B?" B smiled at Rey's apparent ignorance.

"You." He grabbed Rey's collar and smashed him into a locker. Rey grunted in pain, shocked at how strong B was.

"Are you ready to die, smart kid?" Rey gulped.

"No." Brick laughed, more spit landing on Rey's face.

"Good." He raised his hand, flicked, and a piece of metal appeared in his hand. Clicking the side, a sharpened metal blade popped out.

"Goodb-" "Brickford? Rey? What is going on here?" The blade disappeared from Brickford's hand. Mr. Simon, the principal, walked up to the pair.

"I will ask you again. What is going on here?" he look inquiringly towards B.

"Nothing, sir." Mr. Simon didn't seem convinced with the answer, but he didn't go any further with it.

"Well, out with you! It's the weekend, go have some fun!" Rey smiled, and the two began to walk away. Brickford looked at Rey, growling. Rey saw the gleam of silver in B's hand.

"Oh, Brickford. Stay please. I would like to have a word with you." Another growl ensued, and he turned back to the principal. Rey nodded to the principal, and ran out of the building. Only when he was two blocks away from the school did he finally stop to catch his breath. He stopped by the famed corner store of Nass.

Finding $5.00 in his pocked, he went inside and bought himself two chocolate bars and a bag of candy. As he turned the corner, hands grabbed the front of his jacket and dragged him into the alleyway behind the store. Rey's vision blurred as he was thrown around and smacked in the face by multiple unseen men. Suddenly the beating stopped.

Daring to open an eye, he stared, once again, into the face of Brickford. That's not humanly possible to move that fast…

"Miss me?" All went black.

Fuzzily at first, his vision returned. After awhile, Rey opened his eyes to see… not much at all. He was squished into a small box, his knees almost hitting his chin. The top of the box was open, showing the night sky, a wall, and the moon directly above him.

Voices could be heard, but it seemed Brickford was not with them. The guys talking, about 3 or 4 by Rey's estimate, were talking about a rodeo and some sort of retarded clown that was pissing them all off.

Rey shuffled, moving his stiff muscles. He stopped to check if they had heard, then continued to move when he was sure they hadn't. After some struggling he ended up on his knees, his head almost popping out of the box. Slowly, he got onto his feet and popped his head out into the cool air.

Three guys sat around a low fire, all of their backs facing Rey. They all looked as though they were in grade eight or nine. "How does B, a grade six, have grade eight and niners at his disposal?" Rey thought to himself. It made no sense to him.

Another guy walked into the circle from an alley to the right, this one a bit smaller than the others but with a pink-tipped mohawk that stood well above them.

"Brickford…" B walked to the fire and sat beside one of the taller ones, his back towards Rey and his box. It seemed as though the three older boys were… respective of the one younger. It made no sense to Rey.

Rey got back down into the box, strategizing his escape. As he did, another thought crossed his mind. Kill him. It was as though another being, another mind, had thrown the idea into his mind. Rey knew he would never have thought such an idea up himself, but… he liked the idea. To kill B would be to end it, right then and there. No more bully, no more fights…

Quickly a plan formed in his mind, once again as though another being thought it up. Quickly, he set the plan into action.

Popping his head out, he checked to make sure nobody was looking. Just as the other one had said, nobody was looking his way. Taking a quick breath, he jumped out of the box and landed softly just outside of it.

Without thinking, his hand shot out and grabbed something on the ground. Raising it, he found it was a crowbar. Holding the crowbar with two hands, he slowly moved towards the small encampment of guys. As he reached B, he argued with the voice inside of his head.

"Kill him?"
"No, don't! It's not right!"
"Too bad, kid!"
"NO!"

Rey's hand shot forward, the end of the crowbar impaling Brickford through the back. The cry he let out was as though thousands of voices joined him in his death. The crowbar was wrenched from Rey's hand as Brickford's body began to crumple into itself. What happened then was never forgotten by any in the circle.

Brickford exploded.

Surprisingly, no blood splattered across the four watching. Instead a flaming sphere appeared, suspended in mid-air. The three guys in the area, now standing, stared at the sphere. Terror crossed their faces and two of them ran off screaming in fear.

The boy that had stayed was staring into the sphere, his eyes captured by it. Suddenly he fell onto his back, dead.

"Rrreeeeeeyyyyyyy!" a voice called.

"Y-yes?" Rey answered, stuttering at the power he felt within the sphere.

"Do you… Take upon the roll?" it asked.

"W-what r-r-oll?"

"The roll… of the Death Dealer." Images floated in Rey's mind as the sphere showed him the unlimited fountain of power he could wield if he accepted the roll.

"Yes. I do." A tendril of flame broke out of the sphere, and as it came closer to Rey, he had a longing for it. He wanted it to touch him. He wanted to feel the power within it. As it finally reached him, he reached out and touched it.

His body was immediately filled with energies known only to the gods. He felt young and old, strong and weak, confident and scared, love and hate, and then… nothing. As the tendril of power empowered him from the sphere, the voice spoke to him.

"You shall conquer. You shall be feared. You shall know all luxuries."

Rey liked the sphere more and more as it spoke fantasies of power and wealth into his mind.

The tendril broke away from Rey's hand, and returned to the sphere. The transformation had finished. The sphere started to disappear. "Enjoy, Rey. You are no the Death Dealer. An immortal. Son of the gods." the sphere spoke one last time, no more than a whisper in Rey's ear.

As he stood alone in the alley where he was beaten and scarred by the kid he had just killed, Rey felt something he had never felt before.

Power.
