The Lone Shadow Templar

Opus

Many moons have passed since the end of time for me. It seemed like ages ago when I met her, ages ago when we fought together, and ages ago when she died in my arms. Yet I remember that day clearly in my mind, her face a permanent tattoo within my eyes. I am haunted by her presence wherever I go, and now as the rain cascades down my face, I can feel her last tears as I wipe her eyes one final time.

I am twenty four now, those events almost half a decade behind me. I’ve lived my life the best I could for her, and once judgment day comes, I hope she will approve…

The raindrops landed softly upon the windowpanes as the clouds continued to weep upon the earth. Outside, the wind gusted hastily through the nooks and crannies of Henesys, as if rushing to find a way out. It was music to my ears. I leaned back, propping my back up against the backboard of my bed and closed my eyes. Perfect.

Then, I heard the front door open below me, letting in a howl of wind before slamming shut, sealing Mother Nature out into her own realm. He had come home. I looked at the clock on the nightstand: 6:00. Perfect timing.

His footsteps thudded dully against the wooden stairs as he sauntered up towards our bedroom. As he made his way to the top landing, I heard him clear his throat as he reached for the handle. The door opened slowly, revealing his dark brown hair that matched his chocolate eyes.

“Hey babe,” he smiled as he unbuttoned his raincoat and made his way to the bathroom, “How was your day?”

I sat up and sat cross-legged on our bed, “Not bad, how was work?” My right leg was bouncing up and down.

“Oh don’t get me started,” his muffled voice floated to me from inside the closet, “Shittiest of the shittiest of days.” He rambled on about his boss Ken, who I think is a complete idiot. I could hardly contain myself.

As he emerged from within the hanging clothing, I stood up and walked towards him. Grabbing him by his necktie, I playfully swung him around and we landed on the bed. I climbed on top of him and leaned my head close to his, “Hush now honey,” I whispered. I could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand erect, “Just relax and forget about your day.” I unbuttoned the top of his dress shirt, “Right now, it’s just you…” I tore open the next button, “… and me…”

I could feel his exhausted yet minty breath against my cheek as my lips moved closer to his. As we touched, it felt as if nothing else mattered in the world, that this moment would last forever and all I had to do was enjoy it. Our lips were like puzzle pieces made for each other; my mouth molded perfectly against his. As I pressed up against him with my body, I could feel he was enjoying it as much as I was.

“Babe,” he whispered as our lips finally broke the lock.

“Yes honey?” I smiled back, brushing a strand of my blonde hair away from my eyes.

“Have I ever told you that you have the most gorgeous little emeralds for eyes?”

I grinned, “All the time.”

“Have I ever told you that your hair is a perfect hue of blonde?”

“All the time, honey…” Though my heart fluttered each and every time he complimented me.

“Have I ever told you…”

I cut him off, “Shut up and kiss me…”

I didn’t have to say any more. He kissed me with such a passion that I could almost see stars burning through the backs of my eyelids. One of his arms was wrapped firmly around my back as the other caressed my hair, keeping my lips close to his. His kisses were so magical, nothing could even begin to compare. He made me feel like I was the only one in the world for him.

The rain outside started to pound harder down upon the roof, drowning out all other noises except for our two heartbeats. And for a moment, I could hear them both as one. His hands slid against my sides, pulling my shirt up; the feeling of his hands across my bare skin just made me want to kiss him harder, to pull him closer. He was everything to me.

And then, everything stopped. I thought it was something else, a clock alarm, the kitchen timer, anything else but this. Yet in the back of my mind I knew this day would come. The alarm beeped ominously from deep in the back of my dresser. It was judgment day.

I pulled away and looked him sadly in the eyes. “I love you more than anything in the world.”

He stood up, took my hand and pulled me to my feet. I fell into his arms just as he whispered into my ears, “I love you more babe, and don’t you forget it.”

“No matter what,” I replied, never taking my eyes off of him. The alarm started to grow more urgent, “I promise I won’t forget.”

He smiled my favorite smile and disappeared from the room. Immediately, I dashed to the dresser and unloaded all of my clothes onto the bed until I found the watch. The alarm stopped buzzing just as I strapped it on and whipped around. He was already back with our two packs. I made my way around the bed to his side and suddenly, he pulled me in for a quick kiss. As we broke, he said in a serious tone, “I will never stop loving you, Nat.”
Taking one last look at the home we had lovingly built together and lived under for five years, I turned away, the two of us hastily splashing down the Henesian street heading north. I took a peek at my watch. Only ten minutes had passed since he came into the bedroom that would not be there anymore.

Right as we disappeared into the outskirts of the Sleepywood Forest, I pulled out the detonator and flipped the switch.

A clap of thunder drowned out the explosion, and I felt a tear slide down my face, mingling with the heavenly rain.

We trudged through the flooded underbrush for an hour or so before his hand suddenly tensed around mine. We were close now. I looked down at my watch. As the sky turned from grey to black, the luminescent digital numbers slowly illuminated themselves in the darkening forest. It was 19:00.

Both of our packs dropped into the mud with a splash as we both dropped to our knees. I pulled out the long steel case and flipped the double latch. Swiftly, I pulled out the suppressor and fitted it into the muzzle of the MP9 Submachine Gun. Snapping the flashlight beneath the barrel and inserting a fresh clip, I kicked the case into the bushes, concealing it from view.

Stripping down, I threw my old clothes away and slid on a pair of pitch black pants and dark under armor. Throwing my arms through the combat vest, I made sure the extra magazines were where I could reach them. I then wrapped myself in a black cloak and clipped my communicator around my right left ear. Our silver crescent moons shimmered brightly pinned onto the front of our cloaks despite the darkness. Glancing to the right, he was already burying everything into the running mud.

A chilling breeze howled through the tree trunks, bringing a new sheet of tears from the heavens. I hid my weapon underneath my cloak and pulled the hood over my head until there was only blackness inside. Together, we stalked deeper into the forest as night set on. A flash of lightning seared across the bleak, pouring skies, but could not bring light to the world anymore.

One..small irk.
When INITIALLY describing a gun, use lower-case. As if you’re teaching a civilian what it is. Use the name if you want, and you can use titled names afterwards (because guns are now introduced, there’s no need for civility foreplay).

But brilliant story otherwise.
