The Lone Shadow Templar

3: Transition

“No sign of the tango, sir.”

“Negative from squad three sir.”

“Keep searching, she’s got to be out here.”

“Recon team three over; we’re tracking a heat signature from the north west.”

“Squad two follow recon and investigate. It might be her.”

“No tangos in sight.”

“Negative.”

“Roger.”

It was black. Rain and thunder. The storm raged on, howling winds and lashing cold.

“Sir we’re closing in, contact distance twenty meters.”

“Prepare weapons, do not underestimate her.”

“Ten meters.”

“Careful.”

“Five.”

“Don’t do anything stupid.”

“Contact. GET ON THE GROUND, GET ON THE F***ING GROUND! DO IT! DO IT NOW!”

Silence.

“Squad two is the package secure?”

“Winterson and Fragg are going in with the neuro-cuffs. They’re approaching the package now.”

“Good, once we have…”

“OH SH**!”
“What’s going on? Squad two come in!”

“OPEN FIRE! HOLY SH**! BRING HER DOWN! BRING HER DOWN! SH…”

“Squad two do you read?”

Sporadic gunfire. Rain. Thunder. The works.

“Squad two come in dammit!”

A burst of crimson erupted from his neck as I squeezed the trigger. Knowing all of their thoughts allowed me to seemingly dodge all incoming fire by avoiding all of their calculated bullet trajectories. I dodged to the side and fired another burst from my MP9, sending two flipping backwards into the mud.

Their screams only fueled my anger; I could feel a taurospear raging within my heart, it’s thunderous cry matching my own. Instantly, I dove behind the trees, hearing wood crackle and splinter right beside my head.

The last smoking shell landed in the rain-soaked mud just as I inserted a fresh clip. The cold monster in my hand begged for more, and I could do nothing but agree.

Shouts pierced through the rain, all aimed towards me. I could feel their heartbeats beat like none other. The forest was rank with fear. It tasted sweet on my tongue. The beast within erupted.

I sprinted for a nearby tree and jumped, planting a foot on the trunk then flipping in the opposite direction. As I made my way back down to earth, I opened fire, bringing a flurry of bullets from above into the mass of helmeted men. My mouth salivated as more voices were extinguished from my mind. Line up children… there’s plenty of death to go around…

Rolling to a stop, I whipped around, my cloak lashing out in a circle, splashing rainwater all around me. I aimed the submachine gun out in front and pulled the trigger. A muffled yell floated back, silencing another voice in my brain.

One more.

I don’t know how he had survived this long, but it would be over soon. His bullets pelted the soil and tree trunk that I was hiding behind, dirtying my shoes. I grinned wryly.

His muzzle fell silent as a spent magazine fell to the mud. Immediately, I spun out of my cover and dashed the short distance between me and my prey. His arm was reaching for another clip when my knee made contact with his jaw; I felt his mouth break.

He landed on his back after an impressive arched flight. As he tried to prop himself up, I slammed my foot into his chest, feeling a few of his ribs crack underneath my boots.

A guttural grown escaped his broken mouth. His eyes were wide with terror. I’m sure he would have screamed if he could, because his fear pounded deep in my mind.

Then, amidst the mental screams and pelting rain, I heard his communicator crackling. The lion commanding the sheep.

“Dest, what’s going on? Dest do you read?”

“Dest is not here right now,” I replied coldly as I took the communicator from the man.

“Ah, Natalie, what a gorgeous night to have made your acquaintance.” The gruff voice on the other side politely conversed.

“Quit the small talk,” I snapped, “What do you want from me?”

“Well I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure out by yourself.” He replied calmly.

“This better not be about…”

“We needed Nova, but…”

“HOW DARE YOU SPEAK HER NAME!” I roared as he brought up the unthinkable. No Dominion soldier had the right to talk about my sister.

“As I was saying, but she died.”

I knew he was enjoying this, since I had no idea where he was.

He continued, “Now as you may have realized already, you have the Shadow Templar blood. Needless to say, we need it. All of it.”

“You’ll die before you touch me.” I growled, the beast within raging in anger.

“I guess you killed all of my men, but regardless, I will find you, and I will obtain your blood. Good night, dear Natalie.” The communicator crackled dead, and there was silence once more.

Good night. Every passing second was night and forever will be night for me.

So that was my transition. I became Night.
