[NDS]Let's Play a Game! Issue 1

By In Uncategorized

Hi, my name is Brian. My friend whom you all call FireLeo86 is willing to let me write up a weekly blog revolving around games that we play. I hope to put one up every week.

Okay, this week we're talking about the Nintendo DS game… Yoshi's Island DS! Applause shall we?

Plot

Yoshi's Island DS is the sequel to Yoshi's Island. It takes place a few months after the first. The introduction talks about the previous game about how the Yoshis and Baby Mario save Baby Luigi and the Island from the evil that is Kamek. Bah, I hate him. Anyways, the game shows us a strange looking castle with a familiar looking insignia. A much older looking Kamek ,along the Toadies, flies out of the castle and they start kidnapping babies all over. We soon see that the Toadies also kidnapped Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, and a mysterious baby too? Oh my, how unfortunate. As they leave, here comes the stork to save the day! It attacks one Toadie, making it drop Baby Mario and starts peaking another Toadie, making it drop Baby Peach.

Now we see a green Yoshi, just taking stroll. Oh what's this? Yoshi isn't hunched over anymore, that's a nice touch. Anyways, as he walks, here comes Baby Mario who lands on Yoshi's back. Now we revert back to Yoshi's Island Yoshi animation. The narrator says that Yoshi has seen this baby from somewhere before. Come on Yoshi, how can you forget Mario? How can anyone forget about Mario? Oh, and the stork flies in carrying Baby Peach too. But yeah, who really cares.

Yoshi brings Baby Mario back to the other Yoshi's. All the colors return, excluding the brown colored Yoshi, which was replaced with orange. The Yoshis are having a meeting about the two babies. Deciding on a plan and the current situation, green Yoshi jogs up and places Baby Mario on his back. We all know where this is going. As Yoshi and Baby Mario leave, the other Yoshis cheer them on. But what's this? The stork and Baby Peach are following too? Oh how exciting.

Same drill. You go through the stages of the world and fight baddies. You also can switch around babies to suit the current situation. As you proceed through, Kamek tries to defeat you by transforming small enemies into big ones. But nothing that a couple of eggs can't handle right? As you enter World 2, oh no! Baby Peach is being taken away by a monkey. As Yoshi jogs to follow a baby monkey drops down onto Yoshi's back. Baby Donkey Kong joins your team and together, you smash through every obstacle in your path. You eventually find the monkeys with Baby Peach and rescue her. Now we proceed forward.

In World 3-5, you see Yoshi, the stork, and the three babies just standing around like hobos in the rain… Because it's raining on they're on a boat. Yeah, I can see why they need to rest. A large wave comes in and sweeps the team away. Yoshi walks through a cavern and we see a baby floating in a bubble, crying. The baby looks a lot like Baby Mario but the crying is ear piercing. Yoshi rescues the baby and it's… Baby Wario? Due to Yoshi's kindness, he takes Baby Wario along. The two explore the cavern, Baby Wario grabbing coins with his magnet, fighting through the Sailor Guys and eventually meet up with the stork and the three babies. Yay!

After beating World 3-8's boss, Baby Wario stays behind to hunt some more treasure, hitching a ride on a Bandit. Yoshi wonders if his greed will be the end of him. We continue through World 4. At the beginning of World 4-5, a cutscene is triggered, which involves Kamek kidnapping… Baby Bowser? From a younger Kamek?! Insanity I tell you! Baby Bowser is confused about why adult Bowser kidnapped Baby Bowser. There's an argument, involving Baby Bowser calling adult Bowser an old geezer, and the brat is blown out of the castle. And once again, the gang stand around like hobos… Again. Baby Bowser lands on Yoshi and starts to shout why normal Bowser is being mean to him. Doesn't make much sense does it? He sees Baby Mario and Yoshi but somehow doesn't recognize them. Anyways, he rides Yoshi for a bit and decides to tag along. Should we trust him?

After you best the World 4-8 boss, Kamek flies in and shouts something. Baby Bowser then chases him and grabs hold onto Kamek's broom. He's gone and everyone really doesn't care. As you enter the final castle, Baby Wario and Baby Bowser rejoin the group. How exciting. As you enter the boss room, Baby Bowser tells you to leave. But then he gets pissed off when you don't leave fast enoughand starts attacking Yoshi and the gang. Three eggs and he goes down. Kamek flies in and says how could you and that stupid crap. Just then, adult Bowser drops in and starts to attack Yoshi. Small eggs won't work, so grab them big eggs the balloons carry. Aim for the head and then ground pound his exposed belly to beat him. Finally, Kamek turns adult Bowser gigantic. Along with three other Yoshis, you beat him and save the island and other babies.

Nothing new here.

Gameplay

It's a simple platformer. You just go keep following the path and use the correct babies to assist your process. Let's talk about the babies special abilities.

Baby Mario– Good ol' Baby Mario. Hold Y and running would cause Yoshi to dash rather than jog, which is awesome. Not only that, but eggs can bounce off walls like in the first game. He's a light baby so Yoshi's flutter jump will go higher a lot more than with heavy babies.

Baby Peach– She's just the princess. In baby form. Her eggs will pop on contact and no dashing can be done with her. Instead, if there's a gust of wind, she'll put up a parasol when Yoshi flutter jumps to catch the breeze. She's a light baby also.

Baby DK– The king of the jungle is just a baby but he's still strong. Like Peach, his eggs pop on contact. But instead of just a pop, there's a boom, as his eggs explode rather than pop. Crouching and pressing Y will let Yoshi tackle, breaking away those dirt walls and defeating small enemies. Baby DK can also swing and climb vines. His extra weight also allows Yoshi to ground pound stakes in one go, but this also means he weighs down Yoshi's flutter jump.

Baby Wario– He has a magnet that attracts nearby metal objects. His eggs also bounce off walls and he's heavy enough to weight down Yoshi's flutter jump.

Baby Bowser– He breaths fire when you press Y, so Yoshi can't eat anything. This fire goes forward, or upward if aimed up, and instantly defeats most enemies. His eggs bounce off walls too and he's heavy enough to weigh down Yoshi's flutter jump.

End

I can't really think about anything else to talk about. Guess this wraps up the first issue of Let's Play a Game! Next we'll talk about Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorer's of Time & Darkness.
