For most platformers, then definitely. The Super Mario games are good examples I think, the originals were challenging, Super Mario 64 was easier, Sunshine a little harder and Galaxy’s difficultly level is pretty comical. Mario Kart has gone the same way, I pretty much dominate the AI in MK:Wii, except for when I get Blueshelled to hell. 
Fake difficulty is a nightmare nowadays.
