one thing i never get about these harem-esque animes is what the hell is so appealing about the male lead in the first place. There is nothing overtly special about Makoto that would mean having every girl in the entire series want to fuck his brains out.

Agreed. I guess it doesn’t have to make sense. People are attracted to drama. They want to see it. They want to see what happens when everything falls apart in the climax and I suppose that’s what made the show so…uh…popular? I don’t even know if that’s the word.
