ParticipantStatistics for VuTales’ IRC channel can now be found here:
http://stats.rizon.net/chan/vutales.html
What is IRC?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It’s designed for group chat and allows you to chat with people if you’re connected the same server and channel as them. Each channel is basically a chatroom; what you type in the channel gets sent to everyone else in the channel.
VuTales IRC is on the server Rizon (irc.rizon.net) and the channel #VuTales.
How do I use IRC?
Couple of ways. The easiest way is using the Mibbet widget-thing that Vusys set up. This can be accessed by the embedded ‘Chat’ link on the top navigation of the site.
Once you go there and wait for it to connect, simply choose a nickname (your forum name should work nicely, unless it’s taken) and click join. You’re in.
The disadvantage to this, however, is that you have to keep a tab open at all times to stay connected. Not a big deal, but if you’re using IRC anyways…
What’s an IRC client?
It’s basically a program that’s used to connect to IRC. Mibbit (what the Chat link uses) is a web client, which means it’s embedded into the page. Chatzilla is a Firefox add-on that’s a client. mIRC is another popular client. There are others out there, too, if you have a mind to figure out how to use them.
Using ChatZilla
1.
Download the add-on.
2. In Firefox, go to Tools > ChatZilla, which opens a window. Under the Chatzilla menu, go to Preferences > Startup tab. Under where it says Auto-Connect URLs, add “irc://irc.rizon.net/VuTales” (without quotes).
3. Go to the General tab. Under Identification, choose a nickname.
4. Close the client and open it up again through Tools > ChatZilla, or type “/attach irc://irc.rizon.net/VuTales”.
5. A bunch of text should come up, then a new tab named #VuTales. You’re in.
6. From now on, you’ll automatically connect to the server and channel with the nickname you set whenever you open ChatZilla.Using mIRC
I don’t, so this is basically a copypasta from elsewhere! It’s rather long, sorry.
This section will explain how you can use the mIRC Client to connect to the VuTales Channel. It’ll tell you step-by-step instructions on exactly what to do to make the experience easy for you. The time taken to install and get everything up-and-going should be around the 5 minutes mark. You WILL need to install something- so make sure you have the room! Keep in mind that this is NOT the only IRC Client. Once you get advanced / knowledgeable about IRC you can try other programs such as X-Script, No-Name-Script, etc.First off, you’ll need to download the program mIRC. To download mIRC click
HERE. Choose one of the locations to download from- it should download instantly. Save it on your computer (wherever you wish, just remember the location) and run it.
Once it has finished downloading and you’ve opened up the file, you should be greeted by a ‘Introduction Page’. It’ll be the standard page, so after you’ve read it, click NEXT. Next up, it’ll be a page asking you where you’d like to install it. This is your preference- so install the program.
The next screen will have some options for you to choose. If you have never downloaded or used IRC before, leave ALL the settings. Do a ‘Full Installation’. The next screen is again, your preference. If you’d like some shortcuts, feel free to use them.
Now the program has installed and you’ll be needing to put the settings in. Make sure you put exactly as stated!
When you open up mIRC, it’ll pop up a box. Fill out the following information:
Full Name: You can fill this in with either your real information or fake information. It’s nothing important, it’ll just display if someone does a WHOIS on you- which will be explained later.
Email Address: Again, nothing important. It’s never really used.
Nickname: Something important! Make SURE you put your FORUM NAME in here. If you don’t, you might be kicked from the channel or have a name like anon20202. (You may put just a nickname, but I’d advise your FORUM NAME to keep things simple)
Alternative: Put this as an alternative nickname if yours is already taken. In this window, leave the rest the same. Keep the check-mark beside Invisible Mode and no check-mark beside ‘New Server Window’.
Do NOT click CANCEL or OK
Now, look to the LEFT hand side. You’ll see a bunch of other things there. Click SERVERS. You should come up with a new box that says “IRC Network:” and “IRC Server:” along with “ADD”, “EDIT”, and “DELETE”. Below it will have “SORT”, “CONNECT TO NEW SERVER”, a Sun & a box.
Ignore everything except for the first two, which are IRC Network and IRC Server. Look for XELIUM in that window. Just open up the box and press the “X” key, or look alphabetically. Edit the information. Replace irc.xelium.net with irc.rizon.net. On the rare chance that it is NOT there, you’ll have to manually add it yourself.
To do this, press “ADD”, then fill in the following information:
Note from Annona: I BS’d this part, because the copypasta’s for a different server. It should work, but if it doesn’t… -shrug- heh
Description: Rizon
IRC Server: irc.rizon.net
Port(s): 6660-6669,7000
Group: Rizon
Password:Leave the Password blank. There’s no password .
You’re now DONE! Click ‘OK’.
If the server doesn’t automatically connect, look to the top left-hand side of your IRC Window. It should have a little thunder-ish looking icon. Click that once. (If you cannot find it, it should be the first icon starting from the LEFT).
You should immediately see a LOT of text randomly go nuts across the window. Then, a pop up will open up asking to you join what channel. Put in #VuTales.
You’re DONE!. You’ve connected to IRC and can talk / interact with others.
Registering nicknames
If you use IRC a lot, you’ll want to register your nick. This gives it password-protection, so that if another person /nick’s it while you aren’t using it, they’ll be prompted to identify using your password and you can boot them off if they don’t.
To do this, type:
/ns register [desired password] [your email address]An email will be sent to you, which will tell you what to type to confirm your registration. Paste that into the channel. You’re registered.
To identify, type:
/ns identify [your password]
This is the equivalent of ‘logging on’ to your nick. If you’re an op (i.e. Vusys, at this point), you have to identify before you can use your powahs. To ghost (disconnect) someone else who is using your registered nick, type:
/ns ghost [your nick] [your password]Text Styles
