ParticipantSo, Nass’ thread sparked an idea in my mind.
Weed. Legalize or not and why?
No arguing, just discussing, and no stupidity (memes, lululurmother, ect.).
Discussion start.

ParticipantI don’t know too much about the cannabis plant myself, so I won’t go into much detail.
To be honest, I think we should allow medicinal marijuana, AND “casual” marijuana to be legalized. I just think that it should be against the law to smoke it in public, closed spaces, as the second hand smoke effects of marijuana can include the munchies, and the inability to think straight.
I’ve heard that it causes memory loss, and permanent brain damage, but if people are gonna do that to themselves, I could give a shit, as I’ve heard it’s slightly worse than cigarettes. It’s none of my concern though, as I have no intention of blazing, any time soon.Let the people do what they want, as long as they don’t fuck with other people.

ParticipantWell, Lith, in my personal opinion, and scientific studies, the long term effects of both alcohol consumption and cigarettes are far worse than weed.
“Two large studies reported no increase in death associated with the use of cannabis. Even diseases that might be related to long term cannabis use are unlikely to have a sizeable public health impact because, unlike users of tobacco and alcohol, most people who try cannabis quit relatively early in their adult lives, writes the author.Exposure to smoke is generally much lower in cannabis than in tobacco cigarette smokers, even taking into account the larger exposure per puff. Existing studies do not support a link between the use of cannabis and heart disease, the leading cause of death in many Western countries, he adds. Furthermore, cannabis does not contain nicotine, a chemical contained in tobacco that is addicting and contributes to the risk of heart disease.”
As you can see, I support its legalization, if it is given the same laws as alcohol, (since it does impair just about everything), such as over 21 to purchase, no smoking and driving, no public.. not intoxication, but you know what I mean.
Just to note, also, I am not a pothead. I’ve only smoked it twice, and didn’t particularly enjoy it, and I’m probably not going to be smoking it anytime in the future. It’s kind’ve meh. But people are super misinformed about it.

ParticipantOh, I see.
I support it even more now.On a side note, there are so many kids at my school who smoke weed, it’s not even funny. They’re always like, “Jon, you’re always so stressed. Those asian assholes got you down? Still threatening you? You should blaze, you’ll be so chill.”, and I’m like, “I’ll give you cheetos if you go away.”, and they’re like, “‘kay”.

ParticipantBut those are kids smoking it. Irresponsible kids. That would be the same with kids with alcohol or kids with cigs.
That’s why I think it should be legal and illegal to anyone under 21. Because you should be a responsible adult before you smoke that sort of thing.

ParticipantWe had a huge discussion about this in my Morals class.
I think that by legalizing weed, it just might want others to have harder drugs legalized. Where does it stop once its okay to smoke weed? Do we want to allow people to shoot up heroin?
I am all for legalizing it, its just i dont want it to lead to it becoming a gateway for other drugs.12 October 2009 at 22:26 #17077Mipsacri
ParticipantTrue. But there’s no proven link between harder drugs and weed. I think the difference is that weed is an organic substance? It’s found in nature.
“Marijuana does not cause people to use hard drugs. What the gateway theory presents as a causal explanation is a statistic association between common and uncommon drugs, an association that changes over time as different drugs increase and decrease in prevalence. Marijuana is the most popular illegal drug in the United States today. Therefore, people who have used less popular drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and LSD, are likely to have also used marijuana. Most marijuana users never use any other illegal drug. Indeed, for the large majority of people, marijuana is a terminus rather than a gateway drug.”
Meh. It’s all opinions, but I think if you legalize weed, I think it’s pretty cut and dry. Medical studies show that it isn’t nearly as harmful as completely legal substances.

ParticipantWeed is the starting point to all drugs.
But whatever, natural selection will wipe out those who fail at using weed/live properly.
Weed should be legal, but only b/c it’s taxable and could put some more funds to help the other aspects of society.
13 October 2009 at 03:46 #17082Pirkid
ParticipantWeed is technically legal as a medical ailment.
Just give it to the kids already. Half the reason why kids do it is because it’s illegal, they love breaking rules. Secondly, they fact that they are denied what they want infuriates them, and that anger makes adults link the drugs to violence.
Rap music doesn’t really help their cause either.
I would never do it because I’ve heard of people doing extremely stupid stuff because of it.13 October 2009 at 04:00 #17086Nass
ParticipantWhat thread?
OT: Weed, isn’t as bad as a cigarette (in terms of health I think.) And sometimes being blazed ain’t so bad either. It’s kinda like a racist joke. Everyone reacts to it differently. You should see how many kids come to class after lunch “in the zone.”

ParticipantI beg to differ, you see, I know about 4 kids in my school who went to a rehabilitation center once (about 3 I was informed from a teacher when they were acting like a jerk to me and calling me racial slurs). You see, weed is as addictive as much as alcohol and smoking is an addictive substance to you. According to my health book, there are three stages of addiction, first is for fun, and eventually addiction, the next is on dependence, where something happens to your brain so it requires the substance for alleviation of stress, and the third is where the addiction develops into a stage where using the substance is more important than anything else. The kids from the rehabilitation center apparently suffer from withdrawl, dependence on the substance can cause extreme irritability and without the substance in you there is even more irritability. Therefore, the people who were ex-users of drugs tended to act like “assholes.” They weren’t very attentive in class either, and frequently were sent out of the classroom. It’s sometimes not about whether it is medically lethal to your body, but it’s social effects on a person.

ParticipantYour health book doesn’t want you to smoke weed, Zappy.
Weed has no nicotine. That’s the shit that gets you addicted. Cigs have nicotine.
How do you know they went to the rehabilitation center for addiction unless you knew the kids? What if they just went because their parents were scared and forced them?
What if the kids who smoked weed that you knew were just bad kids? I know plenty of assholes who have never smoked weed in their life. That’s like saying, in the summer, ice cream sales increased and murders rose. Therefore ice cream sales = murders, instead of a coincidence.
Could I have some scientific evidence?Plus, I’ve smoked weed twice. I never felt addicted, nor do I feel the need to ever smoke again. Nor do I think I’m an asshole because I don’t have weed.

Was the weed good?
Serious question.

ParticipantZappy, why is weed illegal and tobacco not? They both have the same effects, just that weed has more of a relaxing effect. In addition, tobacco companies also lace cigarettes.
By your logic, alcohol and cigarettes should be illegal too…If weed was legalized, the police wouldn’t have to look for illegal possession, saving their time for other crimes, as well as money to have more police. The government could also tax the weed and therefore, earn more revenue. Don’t want to pay the tax? The money is going to go towards paying off the country’s debt, which surpassed $10 trillion a while ago. Don’t smoke it, then. Easy solution.
