ParticipantDo you think this generation video games (PS3,360,Wii) are harder than the “pioneer” generation (PS1, N64, Dreamcast etc..) games?
I think videos games now are so much easier than when they were back in the day (like PS1 days.)
You wouldn’t believe how many tears, I’ve shed over Megaman x4 and x5. Don’t even get me started with Final Fantasy Tactics. Then you look at games now, most of them are either the same old crap (FPS) or just plain easy.
Discuss.

ParticipantSuper Mario ftw.

ParticipantFor most platformers, then definitely. The Super Mario games are good examples I think, the originals were challenging, Super Mario 64 was easier, Sunshine a little harder and Galaxy’s difficultly level is pretty comical. Mario Kart has gone the same way, I pretty much dominate the AI in MK:Wii, except for when I get Blueshelled to hell.
Fake difficulty is a nightmare nowadays.

ParticipantI been reading Video Game critique of the likes of PC Gamer and Game Informer and even made a review of a couple of games myself. Today, online on Xbox costs a subscription, and one way to piss people off is to make them pay what they were once used to getting for free.
And for the question. Games are harder today than before.
For example, the Original Sonic adventure for the dreamcast was easy, I got all A emblems. Sonic Heroes was difficult. And The secret rings was just plain hard. Mostly since the controls now suck.

ParticipantChrono Trigger. Back then.
The last boss was DEATH.Chrono Cross, overall the game was easy and unmemorable.
I think old games have that whole nostalgic thing going for them. Plus, you can see countless Mario 64 speed runs.

Umm, hell naw for Galaxy being comically easy. The challenging ones are the ones you’re not required to get (i.e. after 60).
Mario Kart Wii is easier in terms of AI, but it takes a lot more skill when playing other people. I know a guy who will lap you easily without using a single item.
A big issue is that we were younger when earlier games came out. Ocarina of Time was hard as hell when I was 10. Couldn’t get past the first dungeon. I went back and tried again 5 years later and had no problem.
I don’t think the average game’s difficulty has changed too much; it’s just the hellishly mean games that aren’t being made any more (Battletoads, Ghouls and Goblins, etc.). There are still hard games like Trauma Center, Fire Emblem, and Ninja Gaiden, but it’s actually possible to beat them.

ParticipantI have to disagree. I had a much easier time (and more fun, too), with older games. Duck hunter, mario, spyro, crash bandicoot…and my favorite, crock D:

What about the xtremely fucking hard Luigi version in Toy Galaxy where you have to collect those Purpose coins. It’s even harder than the Mario Version since it’s timed and almost alll platforms dissipate the moment you step on them or some just swallow you up and kill you instantly?

ParticipantAs time rolls on, programmers find new, and innovative ways to keep the player interested for longer periods of times.
i.e. Adding a mega mushroom to *NEW* Super Mario Bros on the DS, or the element of enemies attacking your last known position in a stealth game like Splinter Cell: Conviction.I think the difficulty of games is more of an age/experience issue. Sure, different games have different play methods, but lots of games have similar mechanics that you could already be used to.
In Spyro 3 on the PS1, I was having the hardest time every beating the Sorcerer on that last level, but now it seems like child’s play. All game genres have their easy/medium/hard games, no matter what era we’re in. I remember playing Bionic Commando for the NES, and finding it so much harder than the more recent remake. I also played the original Castlevania on the PS1, and found it MUCH easier than the newest ones on DS.
There’s also that difference between challenging, and fucking stupid hard.
An example of challenging would be one of the bosses in Dead Space. Never once in that game did I put that game away because the boss was unfair, or stupid. It’s never fuck you in the ass. Now, fucking stupid hard would be a game like Ninja Bread Man.
Just, horrible. That game was frustrating. Jumping was terrible, combat was terrible, the camera was game breaking. It just kills me on the inside that they’re making a second one.All in all, it’s just a matter of what game it is. It’s all very varied, and you can’t give a definitive answer.

ParticipantJust look at Invasion from Beyond.
That game was freaking hard to even get past the 1st mission.
or Megaman x4 compared to Megaman x6.
x6 was probably a million times easier.
Games these days just suck. That’s why I don’t use my 360.

ParticipantWhat?
Games always, and will always rule. Today’s games are amazing and so we yesterday’s. Tommorow’s the same story.
You can’t compare two completely different generations objectively like that, without having to consider the age of participants, the coding difficulty, the resources that companies had, the resources families had.
And don’t try to compare quantity either, saying there’s more good games back then compared to now. What are you defining as back then, exactly? A specific year? A generation of consoles?

As in generation.
This generation of games sucked. And they will never get any better until people realize fighting the aliens, or being a stealthy ninja, having some super uber mutation powers just aren’t cool anymore.
But hey, games don’t need creativity.
It’s all about graphics amirite?
