Ok. This thread is restricted to discussion about names for the forum only. Do not take it off topic. If y’all want to rant, take it elsewhere. Keep the discussion constructive. Any off topic posts (or parts of posts) will result in deletion and a warning (temp ban for those with 2 strikes).

@DarkDragoon: While I agree /b/ isn’t a “trend” and that people liking it isn’t one either, Vusys made it pretty clear it wasn’t happening. Given that, best to let this one go.

Since when is disagreeing with someone flaming? Since when is any argument a flame war? There are no insults being used; there is no animosity between us. I’m not mad at Arly, and he’s not mad at me. If we want to argue (this is hardly an argument), why not? This thread is silly in its focus, so who cares if it goes a little off topic?

You’re obviously getting trolled, Tarheel. Nonetheless, I’m not sure if it’s good for a mod to encourage off-topicness (but it’s not my place to decide), but on the other hand a simple debate doesn’t harm anything whatsoever; in fact, it’s good to keep things lively, and it keeps users engaged in discussion. W/e, I’mm go hit some o’ dat dank.
First post was possibly trollish. Instead of having to warn Arly, I took it seriously. His subsequent responses were not trollish. He’s also not American, so the probability that he’s serious is high.

If you want to be technical, neither the Caribbeans, nor the Hawaiian Islands are part of the Americas. The part of Antarctica and the North Pole that are in the Western Hemisphere are also not part of the Americas. Finally, Greenland is not part of the Americas.

Incorrect. You were trying to say that the entire Western Hemisphere was synonymous with the Americas. I was pointing out that it wasn’t. Western Earth isn’t acceptable because it includes Europe, and really any nation with a culture that originates from Renaissance Europe. The only correct name for the Americas is the Americas. I wasn’t bashing myself at all.

Finally, American is the accepted name for people from the US. Get over it. The world’s vernacular dictates what’s right, not you. It’s not illogical either, as the country’s name IS United States of America. People seem to think that that name means that we’re a bunch of united states who are the region known as America. That’s wrong. We are a bunch of united states that are collectively known as America. You will never, ever hear the “Western Earth” (for the record, the West refers to European-based countries which include, but are not limited to countries in North or South America) described as America. It’s is the Americas. There is North America; there is South America; there is the Americas. These are all references to continents or a collection of continents. America refers to ONE thing: USA.
