My legs kick out and my arms swing from side to side in rhythm. I will myself to give it all I can. My legs kick out harder and further, hands swinging even more furiously than the rhythm before. I pant heavily and break the motion of my arms to wipe the sweat dripping off my forehead. I savor the way the wind is pulling back at me, messing up my fringe for sure.
I try to ignore the burning anger within me, but fail. Indeed, I allow rage to fuel my energy and I use every ounce of strength to kick out with my inline skates. On a side note, it's inline skating, not rollerblading. Rollerblading is for people who patronize the brand Rollerblades. Fantastic marketing. The thought of it somehow manages to irk me and I push myself further.
It’s always the same pattern. After every fight, I grab the keys and put my skates on. Then comes the recklessness of going urban. The feel of adrenalin coursing through my body whenever I cut across the street or leap over a curb. My muscles scream, but I tune them out and kick out harder, closing my eyes to fully enjoy this experience.
Then I open my eyes.
Shit.
It’s a slope. And it’s not any steep slope. It’s an uncompleted slope.
I’m going too fast.
Can’t…
Stop. I feel cold with fear, despite the sun beating down on me. My hands shiver involuntarily. My wheels are picking up speed, faster and faster. I want to enjoy the speed before the end. But I can’t. I clench my teeth without realising. Ever since I fell down a hill, when I was just learning how to skate, the pit of my stomach turns cold whenever I approach a slope or go out of control.
A random line from some kid song plays in my head over. The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round…

I take a deep breath and try to reason with myself.
Gotta time it right.
It’s something I’ve done many times, just never at this speed. The thing about slides is you gotta calculate. Cause if you’re prepared for a short quick slide, and it ends up being deadly fast, you lose control as you don’t expect the speed. Yet if you tense your body for that swift slide, and it turns out slow, you too will lose control.
I twist my shoulder back and kick out my legs as far as they can go. My arms fly out from my sides in a bid to balance myself. I slide. It is worth ten points, this slide. And I reach the edge without failing. My heart beats wildly, all I can hear is the pounding in my ears. My mouth has turned dry, but I am not thirsty. A construction worker is yelling at me, with his hands waving vigorously, but I tune him out. There is a smile on my face that I can’t wipe off.
I am going to do that again.

Ever since i broke my arm “inline skating” i have no tried it again.
Rollerskating is an entirely different game. I’m perfectly adequate with inline skates. A few years ago (sophmore in high school maybe?) I went rollerskating for the first time, and, damn, I sucked. The stuff you can do on them is pretty awesome (and very different from inline skates), but the basics are entirely different. It’s comparable to the difference between driving a car and riding a motorcycle.
Must have been painful.
I don’t like skateboarding, so naturally this means nothing to me, lol.
