Halloweenie.

(Disclaimer: As usual, but since the site is now public, I thought I would add this, this blog has cursing. Lots of cursing. Just like my life. Enjoy.)

Beep, beep, beep!

"9 o'clock." I mumbled, my lids barely lifting the weight of the world, as though the entire world was upside down and in slow motion. Wait, scratch that. I was probably exaggerating. It was October 30th, the day before Halloween, and my day was already bad.

I had been trying to sleep all night, to no avail. Stress had been piling up lately, just from the overshadowing pressure from a pending divorce, and thoughts of where I was going with my life. It was almost overwhelming, and sometimes I just wanted to go back to sleep to avoid the world entirely.

Beep, beep, beep!

"Goddamnit!" I hissed, and in a fit of frustration of the constantly moving surroundings, I karate-chopped the alarm. CLINK! The beeping stopped. I closed my eyes again, but then again, time never really stops, does it?

But, I had to get up eventually. Today was the day I split bank accounts with my ex-husband, so I actually had to see him, even though I had been avoiding him with everything I had. He wasn't a horrible man, but just seeing him tugged at my heart strings.

I rolled out of bed, giving myself a second to catch my balance, rubbing my bare feet on the carpet. "Today is gonna be a long day.." I decided, letting out a long sigh. I finally stood up, stretching my arms and pulling the blinds open. At least it was lovely weather today. I turned towards the bathroom, having given up on any attempts to sleep, but then..

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!

I swung around, my eyes glowing in rage, about to beat that alarm clock to a pulp, but I realized that noise wasn't a beep, it was a ring.

"Shitshitshitshitshit!" I cursed, realizing that was my phone was not on the bedside table where it should, but rarely was. I threw around the pillows, my Domo-kun plushie going flying, when finally I saw the screen glowing out from under the television stand through the piles of blankets. "Hell yeah!" I dive-bombed off the bed to grab it as the last few rings wound down. I scooped it up and fumbled for the call key.

"Hello?!" I bellowed, sprawled halfway off the bed and halfway on the floor.

"Yo.." The voice replied to my enthusiastic greeting, "What's up?"

"Nothing much. You?" A generic response.

"Nothing really. Are you busy today?" It dawned on me that the voice on the other line was Alex, my Mexican stoner friend. He and I are very close, probably because he reminds me of me.

“Not really, just got a few errands to run this morning.” I hoisted myself back onto the bed, curling up into a comfy fetal position, pinning the phone to my ear with my shoulder. “Why, what’s up?”

“Wanna go to Lawrence today?”

An awesome question, to be sure.

Lawrence is about two and a half hours north of where I live, and it is the mecha-center of cool. The University of Kansas is up there, and everything there is so full of life and energy. Imagine the art department of your average college, but the entire campus is like that. Indie record stores and trendy coffee houses galore.

But I couldn’t let on that maybe, just maybe, I would be excited for a trip like this on Halloween weekend, after all, it could be just an errand. “Ah, what’s the occasion?”

“K2.” His answer was short and sweet. But what is K2, you might ask? It’s somewhat of a legal weed; it gives you the same feeling, but is legal. It’s the smoke of choice now days for a majority of my pothead friends, since you can smoke it and keep it anywhere. Only damned thing about that is that Lawrence is really the only place you can find it within Kansas, because Lawrence is just.. so.. damned.. indie.

I rolled over on my bed, letting out a slight yawn. I didn’t smoke much, but it would be a chance to get out of the house and go on a random road trip. “Sounds loooovely.” I purred, “What time?”

“As soon as possible, of course.” I could practically hear the grin in his voice, which meant he was probably smoking the rest of his stash on the way up there. Not a bad idea, I thought to myself.

“Okay, well, I gotta go to the bank at 1. Can you wait to leave till then?”

“Yeah, not a problem. Oh, by the way. Jasmine, Ginger, and Aakash are coming too.”

Oh yeah. This was gonna be fun.

Fast forward to about twelve o’clock. I had taken a shower, eaten breakfast (oatmeal~!), and headed over to the dorms where I used to live and all my friends still live: Brennan Hall. It’s about four blocks from my house, but it was beautiful out. The sun was shining, and the air smelled of the rain from the previous night, but the breeze was just enough to suggest that I wore my black jacket today.

“Fucking Thrice.” I murmured as I thumbed through my MP3 player just to avoid that album. I hated Thrice; I had no clue why my best friend Jasmine decided put them on my music player. But, I was feeling pretty positive that day, Thrice or not, and just as my favorite song by Hot Hot Heat started up, I almost did a bit of a jig down the sidewalk. Apparently, it was much to the amusement to the drivers near me; I could hear their honks through my extra large headphones.

But the walk went way too fast, and I was there before I knew it. I hopped up over the three steps onto the dorm porch, glancing into the window. Nobody I knew immediately to let me in. Since I lived in a different building, I didn’t have keys to get into this one.

“Seriously..?”

Normally there was always someone downstairs in the lounge that I knew who could let me in. But just as I was about to grab my phone from my bag and text Alex to let me in, this tiny, blonde Brennan ghost (a person who lives in Brennan but is non-existant within the community) went inside, apparently back from a jog, and I slid in the door behind her.

Good so far, I thought. I bounded up to the second floor, where Alex’s room was, because I knew noon was far too early for Jasmine or Ginger to be up. I almost ran right past his room, since I was so used to instantly heading to the third floor, for Jasmine’s room. It was at times like this though that I wish the doors pushed open; it would’ve been so much more dramatic to kick the door.

But, I played it cool and just pulled the door open slightly and peeked in. It was a mess, as usual. How he ever passed room checks was beyond me.

Alex had fallen back to sleep, sprawled out on his bed, although fully dressed, shoes and all.

“YO! Douchebag! Wake the fuck up!” I yelled with quite an evil grin on my face, picking up a pillow he had lying on the floor and whacking him in the back with some gusto.

He turned his head slightly to look at me, although his eyes still looked blurry. “I am up.”

“Sure. I heard you snoring.” I said sarcastically with a chuckle, crouching down beside his bed to meet him at eye level. “I was hoping you could drive me to the bank before we all left.”

“Not a problem.” He yawned, then quite suddenly did a back handspring from his bed, and landed quite smoothly on his feet. That was the problem with Alex; he was like a cat, always trying to do more and more physical stunts, but somehow always landing on his feet. I just hoped that would always hold true.

“Well, where is everyone else?”

“Probably still sleeping.”

So, I went and did what any good friend would do. I woke their asses up. I knew Aakash would be up already, because his girlfriend was a morning person, so he had to pretty much adjust his sleep schedule to her.

Jasmine was the easy one. I heard the shower going when I got to her room, so I didn’t even bother going inside, because I knew she was up.

However, Ginger had thought he had outsmarted me. He locked his door. I stood there for a few minutes, knocking. No response. I decided to start knocking the Super Mario Brothers theme.

“Do-do-do-dododo-dooodododododo~”

“Go the fuck away, Melissa. I’m awake, jeebus.”

“What the fuck is his problem?” I pondered, a bit disheartened by his somewhat rude response, but let him be, going downstairs to the lobby again to wait for everyone, sliding my hand on the stair rail as I went.

Just as I reached the bottom, my phone vibrated. I slipped it out of my pocket and peeked at the screen.

“Mike – 1 new text.”

My ex. Fuck.
