Legend Of Mana Review

Legend Of Mana is a classic PSOne game made by the same people who created Final Fantasy. It is part of the Seiken Densetsu series and it’s the fourth game. This game became a hit very fast and it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Granted, it was played during a particularly rough time in my childhood, it was the game that helped me get through those tough nights where I would cry myself to sleep. I saw it in the PSN Store and bought it right away and I thought I’d do a review for you guys in case none of you have discovered this gem of a game yet. I installed it into my psp, but you can play it via the PS3 too.

Also, I’ll update you guys a litte on what’s ben happening lately but I promise the blog is mostly about this game. ^_^

About the game.

Players start off by choosing a gender and their starting weapon. You have a variety of different weapons to choose from that range from 2-handed swords, spears, axes, and even bows. Each weapon has it’s own set of special attacks that you can learn for them. When you pick a weapon, you aren’t limited to that weapon. If you want, you can swtitch weapons as early as the beginning of the game and vise versa. I found that I have quite a liking to the spear due to it’s long range and it’s great ability to chain attacks together. The downside though is that because the spear is thrusted and not swung, I don’t have a wide range of attack.

After that you are given a large map and you can pick where ever on that map to tstar the game in. The map zooms in and you’ll see a larger version of the part of the map you picked sprawled out like if it were on a table and then you can place artifacts down. Artifacts are places and dungeons sealed inside of items. When you place the item down on the map, the item releases whatever city, town, or dungeon that is sealed within and then you can go. From there your adventure can begin.

Yes, that’s my PSP and my piece of shit attempt at taking a picture for you guys.

Pros

The amount of customization in the game is impressive. You’ll have fun playing with lots of different things in the game. There’s a pet system in which you find monster eggs and they hatch into a monster you can keep as a pet. You can feed the pet and take it with you and it’ll help and fight along side you in battle. Along with the pet system, there’s the produce system where you can grow unique produce items with cute names like Mush-In-A-Box and Garlicrown and when you feed them to your pets, they gain unique stat boosts. Each type of produce can yield different results. Like they can raise a pet’s strength and HP but it’ll make them lazier or even the other way around. For those who like battling, there’s a forging system that lets you forge your own weapons and armor and you can even name what you create! I made a spear with high attack power and Light elemental damage and I named my masterpiece Fatalus. You can make it so that your weapons do elemental damage or where your armor gives you resistance to magic. You can use just about any material and you can get varying results. There’s a ton of recipes online that tell you how to make powerful weapons and armor but of course, nothing beats experimentation. Who knows, maybe you’ll come up with an even better recipe yourself!
Those who are more into casting magic, there’s an instrument system. Instruments are used to cast magic. You have your standard elements (earth, wind, fire, etc.) in the form of spirits. You run into spirits in certain locations in certain places. You play music for them and they give you either gold or silver coins. You can then use those coins and any material like dragon scales to create an instrument. For example, I like using Light magic so I use a Wisp coin (Wisp is the spirit that embodies Light), I use dragon scales to make a flute and then I combine the coin and flute to make magic! Gold coins are more effective than silver coins but they are harder to obtain. And there you have it! You can cast magic. But to be able to do all these things, you need to complete their corresponding chapters or storylines which is usually just a small event.

The battling is fun and simple and the bosses are awesome looking, all with their own unique attacks. There’s no real set storyline, rather a bunch of little stories that you complete. There are three main storylines however with bosses that are pretty badass and you can tell that they are special. The chapters range from serious shit to really funny stuff like stepping on crabs.

When you beat the game, you can set the difficulty level, with the hardest mode being called “No Future Mode” where every enemy is level 100 to provide a challenge that is pretty damn fun and exciting.

Cons

The only things I had a problem with was that the game didn’t seem like it was very long and the option of brining in a friend’s created character to fight along side you was taken off of the version you get in the PSN store. You can still have a second player control an NPC character in the party but I don’t know how you would do it unless you have the PSOne and the game or if you can even do it.
And maybe the game was just long enough where I didn’t get bored and short enough where it kept me coming back for more.

And the score is…

I love this game lots and lots. The stories are good and fun and I loved how much time I spent experimenting with those systems or going out in the heat of battle with my faithful pet Sky Dragon, Quon and my trusty spear, Fatalus. I give this game a 10! Mostly because I played this game when I was like…fucking 10 and I still love playing it to this day, 10 long years later. I recommend the hell out of this game to…well, everyone! The game is real easy to get. If you have a PS3 with working internet, you can get this game for only 6 bucks at the PSN store. If you have a PSOne, the disc can be found real easy online and if you don’t feel like spending money but you have a PSX emulator, it can be found in almost every rom site you can imagine.

Life

Nothing really super interesting has been happening lately. I’m going to start saving up to buy a moped so I can stop walking to work in this unberable heat. I’m tired of almost pasing out from having a heat stroke every time I come home. Which is bad because heat stroke can lead to hyperthermia which can then lead to death. I like work and the money it pays but it’s not worth dying over, trololol.

My roomates and my boyfriend like poking fun at me because I can’t cook so I’m thinking about spending the weekend at my mom’s house so she can teach me how to cook and possibly go to the beach if I feel like it. ;>____>
I’m tired of them saying I can’t do anything and that I have no survival skills. I don’t want to be helpless anymore. And besides, my boyfriend’s sister’s cooking isn’t really that great..I mean…I’m not a big fan of bland food since I grew up eating food with lots of flavor. Not that I’m trying to insult her or be rude or anything! D:
I haven’t been able to do much of anything right and it’s kinda making me slink into a little corner where I don’t bother anyone or get in their way.

I’m still trying to get used to living around a bunch of white people. In the city, I got annoyed at the constant music bumping in the middle of the night that would go on until the wee hours of the morning. I thought living here would be quiet all the time. It generally is but for some reason, everyone picks the morning to mow their lawns…when I’m trying to sleep. Then you have all those annoying toy dogs that bark all the time. Then there’s the assholes that let their dogs take shits everywhere and they never bother to pick it up. Especialy if it’s on someone else’s lawn.

My sister-in-law’s dog pee’d on me. I was petting him and he propped himself up onto my leg so I can pet him better. Then he just sort of relieved himself on me while I was petting him. He unleashed the golden fury all over the bottom of my pants, the floor, and my favorite fuzzy slippers that my boyfriend bought me. Which made me mad. Now I hate that dog. I hate him with a passion. -____-;;;
I tossed the dirty stuff in the hamper after I changed and my boyfriend got mad when I did because he didn’t want dog pee on his clothes which I didn’t see a point in as the clothes were dirty anyway.

Then I woke up today and I was in a good mood because my boyfriend promised to walk me to the bus stop and have a drink with me at Dunken Donuts. Then he canceled on me and complained that he had a stomach ache and said: “Maybe next time.”
I was looking forward to this day through the whole weekend and then he just doesn’t want to anymore. Then he said he had a tummy ache and might call out of work. Then I find out he went to work anyway.

._.

Okay, so his stomach hurt too much for him to walk me to the stop and have a drink with me but not bad enough where he would still go to work.

._________.

Fuck my life.

Hope ya’ll are having a good summer.

‘Till next time!

I absolutely loved Legend of Mana, and it’s one of my favorite games on the PSX. Only thing that bothered me about it was that I didn’t save very often.

Watch Food Network. It’s where I got my cooking abilities, and no one has reported food poisoning yet! (I’ve cooked with vegetables, meats, fruits, the whole spectrum.)

The pet system reminds me of the Chao world of Sonic the Hedgehog on Dreamcast. Good times.
