ParticipantDeath penalty is no different than murder. It’s supposed to be a punishment to show others what happens to you if you commit a severe enough crime. But does that stop people from killing? No. The death penalty sends the wrong message. Why kill someone for killing to show killing is immoral?
Life imprisonment is better, because it gives the convicted the time to reflect about his or her actions, and maybe even be proven innocent when truth is uncovered several years later (which has happened).
Plus, it costs a lot more to administer death penalties than life imprisonment. All that legal shat is a lot of money.
Therefore, life imprisonment is the answer. If someone sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, he may kill within the prison, but he could be placed in solitary confinement. 24/7. There he can sit there thinking about his decisions and how he ruined his life, rotting there until his death. On some occassions, he could be let out for a while, or so I’ve heard, so it’s not thaaaaaaat bad. 😛

ParticipantJil said: Death is so final…If you throw them in jail for life, and 30 years later some new light is shed on the situation and the guy turns out to be innocent (e.g. DNA forensics), you can let them out. But then again you could argue that locking up someone for 30 years and then saying “oh sorry, we made a mistake, you can come out now” is just as damaging or more.
On the other hand, you simply can’t revive a dead person. Ever. No matter how long or short it’s been since they died. At least there’s some hope for inprisonment.
Would you support it if it was reserved only for cases in which there is clearly indisputable evidence? (Such as camera footage showing the murder take place.)

ParticipantI think the death penalty should be employed when pretty much everyone has reached the unanimous agreement of “yea, if something happened and this guy broke out of prison, we’d be fucked, so it’s safer to send him swimming with the fishes” D: but that’s just my opinion…

ParticipantI think it should be the “second offense” kind.
I know it allows for more offenses but it also lets false convictions go.

I think I agree with this. I think?

I honestly doubt a few hundred mL of anything besides liquid gold is either.

ParticipantWhy don’t we just abolish ridiculously harsh sentencing practices instead? You speed 100 miles in 68 mile an hour zone, lift a yu-gi-oh card from a store and this is your 3rd time doing it? Oops Third Strike
*Throws you in jail for 5 years*
If we do, California or any other state wouldn’t have such a financial conundrum right now.

ParticipantHeyhey, just remember that when you buy something and pay taxes, your money’s gonna go towards paying for food and shelter for someone who killed someone’s pappy or mommy or raped someone’s sister.

ParticipantAnyway, death row inmates usually are still around for a couple decades after they’re sentenced… and there are always appeals and whatnot… :/
19 November 2009 at 15:59 #17914Pirkid
ParticipantThere’s just too much slops in the Justice System, they don’t have enough time orresources to take care of every appeal and case and therefore things get forgotten or ignored.

Participantonly death is a punishment equal to murder (especially if it was a planned murder or its a psychotic serial killer)
