Circuitry, P2

Oh, hello.
Didn’t see you there.
As most of you already know, I’m in Taiwan until the 9th of April, so this is giving me a lot of time to get back in to writing. I’m going to make this one short so I can get back into the groove of story writing. Feel free to go reread P1 to get a feel for it again.

“Shit!” Rae exclaimed. How could he have been so careless? The darkness was becoming more and more prominent. He shoved the windmill aperture back in to his messenger bag and screwed the plate back in. Just then did the absence of light really stifle Rae. He felt a shudder up his spine, not unlike the one you would get if you were cold, but the sensation was much more sinister. Much darker.

The lighting around Rae was engulfed as the wind filled the horizon. Rae lifted his OverSoul close to his face. “Clarity”, he said talking into his wrist. Suddenly, a flash of light came out from the sides of Rae’s OverSoul, surrounding him in a great sphere of light. He could see around him more clearly now. He looked behind him, suddenly aware of how much closer the wind was to him. He closed his eyes, concentrated, and once again his eyes glowed a radiant amber. With no hesitation, he bent his knees, and leaped off the windmill. He landed both feet on the ground, and instantly fell forward on his right shoulder into a parkour roll. After gaining momentum from the roll, Rae began to run as fast as he possibly could, occasionally looking behind him to see the progress he’s made on the field. He was putting good distance between him and the wind.

Rae went through his mental check list. After installing the component, he was to try and get the generator underneath the surface up and running again; clearly not going to happen today.

“Navigator: Distance from safe zone.” Rae said into his OverSoul.
“1.6 kilometers. At current speed, estimated arrival in 3 minutes” the device chirped back at him. 3 minutes wasn’t good. Rae could only sustain his current speed for up to 2 at most. He continued to run at the same speed, monitoring the wind to make sure it doesn’t speed up.

At around 1 minute to his destination, Rae’s strength began to wane. He had put a good half a kilometer distance between him and the wind, but he wasn’t reassured yet. Suddenly, the wind began moving faster, and the uproar of the behemoth shot through Rae like a .357 round. Rae felt a surge of panic as he pushed his legs as far as they would let him. He could see the chute that would head in to the ground, safe from the wind. The chute was open, and this gave Rae a sense of hope.

“10 seconds to destination.” his wrist chirped at him. Determined to make it in to the chute alive, Rae down-shifted his body and braced for the impact of his face meeting metal.
“3… 2…1…” counted the OverSoul. Rae jolted in to the chute head first, forehead meeting the back of the unit. As soon as he felt his head meet cold hard reinforced titanium, he used his left arm, and flung it at the big red button on the control panel. As the chute door closed, and the unit prepare to shoot itself downwards, Rae could feel a wisp of the dark wind reach him inside the chute, and it took his breath away. Panting heavily, Rae looked at the screen above the big red button. It displayed current conditions outside, reading “Class 5 Wind Storm; Escalating to Class 1 Hurricane.” He gave an enormous sigh of relief and wiped the sweat from his forehead.

When the chute stopped, the door opened, Rae stepped in to the warm underground lair he constructed out of the underground power station connected to the windmills. The place was big to say the least. Rae walked forward in the bumble-bee colored black and yellow hallway until he came to an intersection. Up ahead of him were two signs. One pointing to the right reading, “Main Power Hub”, and the one point the left “modified” by Rae reading, “Crash Pad”. It originally said “Secondary Power Hubs and Communications”, but Rae had done a little bit of renovating. He stole all the mattresses, seats, and anything cushiony from the break lounge near the Communications office and redecorated the atrium to make his new bedroom. He turned left, and entered a room that looked like every 6 year old’s Saturday morning adventure. Not much to work with in a power station.

Rae dropped his bag on a Domo-kun pillow and pulled a drawer out from a night stand. In it was a picture of Angel, a pistol, a box of 9mm rounds, and a golden pocket-watch. He picked up the picture, staring wistfully at it and gave it a kiss. She was wearing a blue, black, and white one piece with no sleeves that extended from her collarbone down to the tips of her knees. She was smiling, and on the side, she had written, “Smile, would you dear?”. He put the picture down and picked up the gun, rubbing his thumb against the grip. It was a Beretta 92 modified to hold an extra bullet in the chamber that would be put in to use after pulling the trigger three times in a row after a magazine runs out. A backup, just in case. It also had a 3 cm longer barrel with the word Impero written along the side. He pulled the magazine release button and checked to make sure the magazine was full, laughing at himself the whole time. “What good will this do against the wind?” he asked himself. He slid the magazine back in, cocked the slide, put the gun down, and pushed aside the box of S&W rounds. He closed the drawer.

He walked over to the fridge he had to drag in from the lounge and opened the bottom compartment. Out of it, he took an A&W Rootbeer can, and a TV Dinner. He opened the main compartment of the fridge and checked his supply. He still had about 4 months worth of food left. Raiding the supermarket across from the plain before the winds stretched to that area was a good idea. He closed the fridge door, popped the TV Dinner in to the microwave sitting on the reception desk, and moseyed over to his makeshift frankenstein bed and put the root beer on a coffee table from the waiting area. He let himself fall on to the array of different cushion-like objects and felt his eyes involuntarily close. All the while, thinking of that blue, black, and white one piece.
